Athens Municipality Looking for Buildings in the City to Paint Murals On

The Municipality of Athens is searching for buildings to paint murals on aiming to liven up the city center and promote contemporary art in an urban environment.

In the context of its public murals project, after refreshing the city’s school buildings with street art, the municipality is extending its program to private buildings located in the center and neighborhoods of Athens.

“Our program is extending to all seven municipal districts of Athens’ neighborhoods. Our aim is for the city to become more colorful and for its buildings to become a ‘canvas’ of contemporary art through the eyes of its young talented street artists,” Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis said.

The city center’s residents, organizations, public and private bodies can contact the municipal services of Athens and propose their own wall surfaces that could be used for the development of murals, provided that their properties are within the municipality’s limits.

Those interested can send their property’s address, a photo of the wall’s surface and their contact details via e-mail to cityhallculture@cityofathens.gr.

Athens’ latest murals were recently created on the walls of the 104th Elementary School and the 18th Lyceum (high school) and are dedicated to Greek painter Theofilos and poet Andreas Kalvos.

According to the municipality, two more school buildings will unveil their murals by the end of the year.
