Covid-19 Restrictions Imposed on Zakynthos, Lesvos

Greek health authorities on Friday announced emergency restrictions for the islands of Zakynthos and Lesvos, following a surge in coronavirus cases.

According to Deputy Civil Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias, the localized restriction measures will be in place for two weeks starting from 6am on Saturday (August 29), and include:

– Closure of all shops from 11pm to 7am,

– A ban on all events including parties, outdoor festivals, religious/church gatherings, open-air “laiki” markets,

– The prohibition of all forms of public gatherings of more than nine people in public or private spaces,

– A limit of four people (six if they are family members) at restaurant or café tables,

– Masks must be worn at all times in indoor and outdoor areas.

Hardalias said that Covid-19 restrictions in Chania, Halkidiki as well as on Mykonos, Paros and Antiparos will be extended for two weeks.

Meanwhile, Greek authorities announced emergency measures for the area of Imathia in northern Greece, that include the closing of all restaurants and bars from midnight until 7 am, and a 50-person cap for all public and social events and gatherings, with the exception of activities in establishments where special rules already apply such as restaurants, theaters and cinemas.

On Friday, Greece reported 270 new coronavirus cases. Since the start of the pandemic, the country has registered a total of 9,800 Covid-19 infections and 259 deaths.
