Only Greek Island Residents, Suppliers Allowed to Travel by Ferry
Greek authorities tightened restrictions for ferry travel on Friday, in view of the coronavirus pandemic, allowing travel only to permanent island residents and to those wishing to return to Athens.
The decision, announced today by Shipping Minister Yiannis Plakiotakis, came after dozens of city residents departed for the Greek islands increasing the chances of Covid-19 spread outside urban centers.
The restrictions, which go into effect at 6am on Saturday, do not apply to suppliers.
“The key message here is ‘We stay at home’ and limit our movement to the extent necessary to protect ourselves and our fellow citizens. In this context, from 6am on 21 March 2020, only permanent island residents are permitted to travel to the islands,” said Plakiotakis.
The restriction comes after Athens’ public transit authorities reduced the frequency of metro, train and tram services and cut the after-midnight service.
The ministry is expected to announce additional measures including the allowance of 10m2 space per passenger in line with safe social distancing guidelines for protection against Covid-19 infection.
