Study: Greece – Spain Tourist Spending Disparity
Travelers to Spain spent on average 54 euros more in 2018 and an additional 9 euros in 2019 based on study of Greece’s rival markets released this week by INSETE, the Greek Tourism Confederation’s (SETE) research body.
According to the study, Spain recorded 1,102 euros in individual traveler spending last year with those visiting Greece spending 564 euros; and 1,084 euros and 520 euros, respectively in 2018.
INSETE analysts cite the different source markets of both countries, with Greece welcoming a large number of tourists from Balkan nations who spend less on average pushing the overall figure downwards.
Under study hypothesis that Greece brought in travelers from the same source markets as Spain, the difference in average traveler spending would come to 10 euros in 2018, with Greece taking the lead in 2019 ahead by 45 euros bringing average per capita expenditure in 2018 to 600 euros for Spain and 590 euros for Greece, and in 2019 to 608 euros for Spain and 653 euros for Greece.
The study findings come to reverse perceptions that compared to its main competitors Greece is a cheap destination for European tourists. On the contrary, INSETE analysts say, overall European travelers spend more in Greece than in Spain, which wins the share of spending by US and Russian travelers.
In terms of overall spending including tickets, suppliers etc, travelers from seven markets, namely Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Switzerland, spend more on average in Greece than in Spain.
The study found the difference in spending to range from 20 euros (Germany) up to 350 euros (France). In contrast, visitors from the US and Russia spend much more in Spain at 1,743 euros and 1,516 euros, respectively than in Greece (1,686 euros and 1,058 euros, respectively).
This disparity however decreased in 2019 compared to 2018 demonstrating, INSETE says, that there is room for improvement of the Greek tourism product so as to attract higher spending visitors.
